Custom Markets - Labor Productivity

The Labor Productivity report displays labor productivity data for all machines included in the selected custom market. The report provides a graph and a table view of labor productivity showing the man‑hours per FMT or FST, which demonstrates the labor hours required per unit of production for each machine or mill.

Report Options

Balance Date: Shows the most recent date when any mill‑level changes required a rebalance of the mills included in the market. Can be changed to check the state of the market at an earlier point in time.

Format: Determines how costs are displayed. The default format is cost by machine (paper machine or pulp dryer) by product, but this can be changed as needed.

Highlight: Opens the highlighting tools. For details, see the How to highlight and label mills or companies article on the support hub.

Compare Dates: Allows comparison of two different cost dates within the same view. For details, see the How can I compare the cost at two specific points in time article on the support hub.

Custom Market Reports - Labor Productivity - Graph

The Labor Productivity report shows the labor productivity for all machines or mills included in the selected Custom Market.

The X‑axis represents the capacity of the machines or mills. (e.g., 700,000 finished metric tonnes in the example below).

The Y‑axis represents the number of man hours (labor hours) per ton(ne) produced.

Each symbol (triangle) on the chart represents a paper machine or, when a market pulp grade is selected, a pulp dryer. If the Format is set to Mill, each symbol represents a mill instead of an individual machine.

The symbols are color‑coded by company, allowing users to quickly distinguish assets owned by different companies.

Selecting a machine or mill symbol displays detailed information, including:

  • Company name
  • Mill name
  • Product produced
  • Man‑hours per FMT or FST (as per user preferences)
  • Cost quartile (Q)
  • Capacity per day and per year

Users can label a specific machine by selecting Label Machine. Label can be removed at any time by selecting Remove Label.

Selecting Mill Details navigates the user to the Mill Details page for more in‑depth information.

Update Graph Format allows to Indicate By, the colors and legend automatically adjust based on the selected item:

  • None – Default setting by machine or mill, color coding by company but without legend.
  • World Region – Shows machines/mills of the same world regions/continents in the same color.
  • Region - Shows different countries or sub-regions if applicable in different colors.
  • Product – Shows different products (when several products are included) in different colors.
  • Company – As None, but the legend shows company names.
  • Highlight – Removes all color coding, allows to better look at a machine/mill info, or to label it.

To return to the original indication settings, click on None.

To the right of the Update Graph Format dropdown, there is an Export button that allows exporting the chart into different formats: PDF, Excel, Word, Powerpoint and JPG.

Custom Market Reports - Labor Productivity - Data

The Labor Productivity Data report lists the machines and/or mills in the same order as in the graph view—ranked from the lowest man hour to the highest man hour machine or mill. Click on the Data tab to access the data report.

When switching to Data, an additional Report option becomes available: Display. You can chose between the default Man hours/FST or FMT, or change it to Labor Allocation.

For each machine/mill, the Man hours/FST or FMT data report shows:

Configuration: Indicates whether the mill or machine is integrated, semi‑integrated, non‑integrated, or recycled.

PM#: Shows the number of the specific paper machine or pulp dryer if Format is Machine.

Capacity FST/D or FST/Y, FMT/D or FMT/Y: provides the machine’s production capacity in both daily and annual terms, depending on the preferred Units.

Man hours/FST or FMT: Displays the detailed breakdown of the estimated man hours per ton(ne) produced if the machine is running on full capacity (357 working days per year.

  • OPS: Machine operators: Operators directly involved in producing the pulp and/or paper.
  • MAINT: Maintenance operators: Personnel responsible for equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • TOTAL: Hourly workforce total: Total man‑hours for employees paid on an hourly basis (OPS + MAINT).
  • EX: Salaried (exempt): Salaried employees exempt from overtime.
  • NON‑EX: Salaried (non‑exempt): Salaried employees eligible for overtime.
  • TOTAL: Salaried workforce total: Total for employees paid on a monthly salary basis (EX + NON‑EX).
  • MILL TOTAL: Overall mill total for man‑hours per FST or FMT, combining hourly and salaried workforce.

Switching the Display report option to Labor Allocation shows the number of workers/employees estimated for each category, as well as the estimated total Man hours/FST or FMT.

Note: for more details on the estimation of the labor allocation, go to the article How does Fastmarkets estimate the man hours in Labor cost/manning? in the Fastmarkets support hub.

Sort By

The Sort by function allows to sort the Labor Productivity data report by different categories, enabling users to view and analyze the data from different perspectives. The default setting is Group By None, and Sort By Mill Total. Changed settings of Sort By or Group By remain active when moving from Data to Graph view.

Group by

The Group By function allows users to organize machines and mills according to different dimensions. This helps tailor the view depending on the scope of the market being analyzed. You can group the data by:

  • Product – when multiple products are included.
  • Company – when multiple mills, machines, and products are included.
  • Mill Name – when several products are included in the market.
  • World Region – when more than one world region is included.
  • Region – when several countries or sub‑regions are included.
  • Configuration - when different types of mill configuration are included.

Select the grouping that you wish to use, possibly add Then Sort By and click on Sort Table. Selecting None will take you back to the default setting.

In the data report, each grouping displays the total capacity (per day and per year). Average, minimum and maximum are showing by capacity and the relevant man hours for each category.

The Export button on the right-hand side enables the export of the data report to Excel with the Sorting that has been set.
