CBAM Calculator
CBAM Calculator is an Excel-based, customizable tool that allows users to input their import and emissions data to calculate the associated CBAM costs, certificate requirements, and embedded emissions. This tool allows users to analyse and compare forecasts across different EUA price scenarios and policy parameters.
Analysis Tab
User guide:
1. Overview of the CBAM Cost Calculator
- The analysis view tab is a tool for calculating CBAM costs for specific imports.
-
Layout:
- Left: User inputs
- Middle: Graphical outputs
- Right: Long table format outputs for export.
2. Minimum Data Requirements
-
To use the calculator, you need to input:
- Country of origin (e.g., United States of America)
- Product (must be specified at the CN code 8-digit level)
- Import volume (e.g., 1000 tons)
- Product type for certain cement CN codes where the European Commission requires further granularity
- If only minimum data is provided, outputs will use default values and benchmarks for the CN code and country.
3. Default Values and Outputs
-
Outputs include:
- Total CBAM cost
- Cost per tonne imported
- The number of CBAM certificates required
- The embedded emissions in the products imported
- All calculations are done at an Import ID level
- The Methodology tab details all of the calculations, policy assumptions and data sources used
- The price of CBAM certificates in each year is estimated based on Fastmarkets' EUA price forecasts
4. Utilizing Ranges in Outputs
-
You can enable ranges to see:
- Highest and lowest emissions intensity default values for the country.
- This helps in understanding where your data stands in comparison.
5. Customizing Inputs
-
Instead of using defaults, you can use your actual
- emissions intensity factor
- benchmark factor (which can be calculated in the Benchmark caluclator tab when required)
- carbon price already paid
- This customization will adjust all outputs based on your input.
6. User Parameter Choices
-
Tailor outputs to specific scenarios by adjusting:
- EUA price scenarios (e.g., higher trajectory)
- Viewing outputs in nominal euros or Real 2025 euros
- Emissions intensity changes over time (decarbonization scenarios)
- Delays in the phasing out of free allocations
7. Applications of the Tool
-
The calculator can be used by:
- Importers to estimate costs
- Procurement teams for cost estimation and comparing suppliers
- Producers to benchmark against competitors
