Pulp & paper mill data reports

The Mill Asset Database provides two ways to analyze mill data: grouped mill reports and individual mill detail pages.

Grouped Mill Report (landing page)

Assets Report and Map

After applying filters on the Assets page, select View Search to open the Search Results. From there, you can compare all selected mills in a list view, or select a specific asset—either from a report or directly from the mill map—to open its detailed mill page.

Below the mill map, the Assets report displays a list of all mills included in your selection. The report provides key information for each mill, including location, grades and products, company website, number of employees, type of operation (for example, pulp mill or paper mill), operational status (active, idle, closed, for sale, etc.), and a Benchmarked indicator showing whether the mill has been cost‑benchmarked.

When exporting the Assets report, additional fields are included, such as the year the mill was built and the mill’s map coordinates (X/Y). These fields can be used to create your own customized maps of the selected mills.

All reports can be exported to Excel using the Export to Excel button. You can choose to export either the current data view—reflecting the report exactly as displayed on screen—or the entire data report, which includes all reports associated with the current selection.

By default, the report is sorted by Asset Name, but you can change the sorting to other columns as needed. The report initially displays 25 rows, and you can adjust this setting to show a different number of rows per page (10, 50 or 100).

Capacity Report

The Capacity report displays capacity by Product for the selected Grade/Product. If a mill produces multiple products within the selected Grade/Product, it will appear on multiple rows. Capacities for other grades or products produced by the mill are not shown in this report.

Additional columns provide the mill’s total capacities, including total pulp capacity (including recycled pulp), total market pulp capacity, and total paper and paperboard capacity. The final column shows the combined total of paper/paperboard and market pulp capacity for the mill.

Cost Report

The Cost report contains the basic cash cost per ton(ne) produced for each product of the mills. This includes the cost of fiber, energy, chemicals, labor and maintenance. Go to the Cost Benchmarking Basic help article on the Fastmarkets Support hub for more information.

Note: depending on the subscription level, the cost tab may not be available.

Key Personnel Report

The Key Personnel report displays both headquarters and mill‑level personnel for the mills included in your selection. If you are looking for personnel associated with a specific mill, it is recommended to open the mill details page for that asset. The mill details view (click on an asset name from any of the reports) excludes headquarters contacts, making it easier to search and identify relevant mill personnel.

Note: Due to GDPR regulations in most Western European countries, key personnel information is not available for mills located in this region.

Consumption Report

The Consumption section includes several reports. The Fiber Furnish report shows the overall breakdown of pulp grades used by each paper mill, as per the estimate by Fastmarkets RISI's cost engineers, based on a 100% capacity utilization (357 operating days) The subsequent reports provide more detailed views of the same data, including Natural Wood (wood used to produce integrated and market pulp), Market Pulp, Recovered Paper, and Natural Non‑Wood.

In addition, the Pulp and Paper Furnish report displays the quantities of additives—such as coating, filler, and starch—alongside the pulp grade breakdown.

Please also read What is the difference between Consumption and Furnish?

Consumption Report - Fiber Furnish

The % Fiber Furnish report shows Fastmarkets’ estimate of the proportion of pulp used at each mill, including recycled pulp. It distinguishes between manufactured pulp (integrated pulp produced on site) and purchased pulp (market pulp).

The Pulp and Paper Furnish report, located adjacent to the % Fiber Furnish report, shows Fastmarkets’ estimated consumption of pulp used at each mill, including recycled pulp. Consumption is reported in tonnes per year.

Consumption Report - Natural Wood

The Consumption – Natural Wood report shows the estimated volume of wood used by mills each year to produce pulp, including both integrated pulp and market pulp.

Consumption Report - Market Pulp

The Consumption – Market Pulp report shows the annual amount of pulp purchased on the market by each mill, based on Fastmarkets RISI estimates.

Consumption Report - Recovered Paper

The Recovered Paper report shows Fastmarkets’ estimated annual consumption of different types of recovered paper used in recycled pulping at each mill.

Consumption Report - Natural NonWood

Pulp Equipment Reports

The Pulp Equipment reports provide information on the pulp‑related equipment for which data is available. The first report, Pulp Equipment Summary, offers a high‑level overview, including the number of systems installed. The subsequent reports provide detailed information by equipment type, including mechanical pulping systems, chemical pulping systems, recycled fiber treatment systems, bleach plant lines (including bleaching sequences), chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) generators, pulp dryers, chemical recovery boilers and evaporators, and lime kilns.

Energy Equipment Reports

The Energy Equipment reports provide information on the different types of energy‑generation equipment installed at the mills for which data is available: Recovery boilers, steam, gas and hydro turbines.

Clicking on the individual items below Energy Equipment will open the reports for:

Energy Equipment - Power Boiler

Energy Equipment - Recovery Boiler

Energy Equipment - Electricity Generation

Shows turbines that are generating electricity at the mill

Certification Reports

The Certification tab indicates whether a mill holds specific certifications, including forest certifications, ISO certifications, health & safety certifications, and food or carbon certifications.

Note: certifications may apply only to certain products rather than the entire mill. As a result, a mill may produce both certified and non‑certified products on the same paper machine.

Investment Report

The Asset Investment report provides a comprehensive overview of current, future, and historical capital investments at pulp, paper, and wood mills, covering a period of more than 30 years.

Where available and applicable, the report includes details such as the type of equipment, the grade or product involved, capacity changes, expected completion date, project status, and investment amount.

In addition, the report covers both announced and historical mill closures.

Click the Detail button to view additional information for each project. Where available, this may also include the name of the supplier or developer.

Note: The Asset Investment data is integrated with the Projects database in the Mill Asset Database and therefore reflects the same underlying information.

Individual Mill Details

The Individual Mill Details pages provide comprehensive information about each mill, organized across multiple tabs. Data can be printed and exported to Word. The first tab, Overview, brings together the key high‑level details.

Individual Mill Details – Overview

On the Overview page, you can find general information about the mill, including its operational status (for example, active, idle, or scheduled for closure), number of employees, ownership, type of operation, and the year the mill was built. My Notes lets you add private notes about the company that are visible only to you. Group Notes show notes shared by other users at your company. From this page, you can also download the Process Flowsheet and view the mill’s address and contact details, an embedded Google map, certifications, and any additional information related to the mill or its products.

Further down the page, the Finished Products Summary displays the mill’s production capacity, paper and paperboard capacity as well as its pulp capacity. It also provides a breakdown of grades produced, along with key data on major paper machines or pulp dryers.

Individual Mill Details - Flowsheet

The process flowsheet can be opened via the Download Process Flowsheet button from the individual mill details' Overview page on the right. The flowsheet provides a simplified representation of a facility’s major process equipment and the results of the mass and energy balance performed for that facility. For help in understanding the flowsheet, please see the Glossary of symbols and the Mill Asset Database Glossary for Abbreviations, Conversions and terminology used.

NB: The summary box in the lower left corner of the flowsheet displays the unit consumptions calculated by product for that specific facility flowsheet. Consumptions are per tonne/ton and per mill, and might be different if several machines produce the same product.

Individual Mill Details – Capacity

The Capacity tab allows to see the capacity breakdown* in ton(ne)s per year and in percentage of the total for each product produced at the mill. Integrated pulp is not showing on this page. The cash cost in the last column (on the right) only shows if cost is included with the subscription package. Cost shows in preferred units (currency and metric/short ton(ne)s) as per the Preferences set up in the Mill Asset Database.

*Capacity breakdown as per estimate of Fastmarkets RISI's cost benchmarking engineers.
